May 28 saw the men’s national senior teams and potential U/23 team members attend a training camp at Mandeville.

According to Gerry Smith, the team manager for both the men’s national senior squad and the U/23 squad, the men’s national senior side has been selected to take part in a prestigious Morocco tournament later this year. The South African team will compete in a 10-team tournament .

SA will compete against Morocco, Algeria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Senegal and Bahrain in the 10-day tournament.

The senior side will also be using this as an opportunity to train and learn more skills as next year is the world qualifiers. The following year is the World Championships.

“The team recently underwent restructuring,” said Smith. Changes were made as a result of players having other obligations, as well as a need to take individuals out of the team.

“This will also give the newer players a chance,” said Smith.

“We are optimistic to come back with a medal,” he said.

The U/23s took part in a training camp on May 28, which allowed for potential players to learn and practice skills. The day also allowed for the selection of the U/23 team, with some individuals travelling from as far as KwaZulu-Natal to try out for the selection.
