Cycling for sight

The race will take place at the Boksburg City Stadium on February 14, in aid of Retina South Africa.

Entries for the Dis-Chem Ride for Sight Cycle Race are open.

The race will take place at the Boksburg City Stadium on February 14, in aid of Retina South Africa.

Ms Linda Vogel, from Retina South Africa, said the organisation performs research about conditions that can lead to blindness. The organisation also offers support to patients affected by blindness.

“We are a patient support organisation and all the proceeds from the cycle race will go towards research into fighting retinal blinding conditions, such as retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration,” she said.

The 116km and 62km race attracts professional cyclists from around the country.

She said the event also attracts amateur cyclists as well.

The past winners of the race include Christoff van Heerden, Juan van Heerden, Gary Beneke, Malcolm Lange, Cherisse Taylor, Ronelle van Wyk, Karin van der Bilj and Anke Erlank.

Ms Vogel said the race is manned by over 400 volunteers.
