No-show frustrates local football team

The Corinthians Football Club from Bedfordview scooped three points in the SAB League after their opponents failed to arrive for the Saturday fixture.

The log leaders were supposed to play against Diambers at the Greek Sports Grounds in Bedfordview.

Diambars FC notified the local club that it was unable to honour the fixture, as its players had already left for the school holidays.

Refereeing the game was Steven Brown, assisted by Dennis Rasekgela and Lindiwe Motau. The officials were on the field for more than 20 minutes before calling off the game.

“We received information that Diambars FC was not coming just after 2pm. But due to procedures, we had to come to the field, inspect the field and the Corinthians FC players as normal. I blew the whistle to start the game and blew it to end the game. That means it was a walk-over for Corinthians FC,” he said.

He said he and his assistants, Rasekhela and Motau, will write reports to submit to the league which will take a decision.

“Although we knew they were not coming, we had to wait until the start before we could call off the match. This is done in case the team changes its plans and comes to the field a minute before kick-off,” said Brown

Corinthians FC SAB head coach, Richard Lovell, said he was disappointed with what happened.

“We had a great week at training. We wanted to score more goals to cement our position at the top of the league. We were ready for this game. We worked hard preparing for this game,” he said.

Lovell said his team has the potential to proceed all the way to the Premier Soccer League.

“The SAB League is the fourth level of the PSL. It follows after the AB Mtsipe League, the NFD League and then it’s the Premier League. If we remain on top of our league until the end of the season, we will play against other regional winners.

“If we win we, we will be promoted to the AB Motsipe League. That is why we wanted to play this game and score as many goals as possible,” he said.

Brown said the league will take a decision about the game after it received his report. He said the decision will include the number of points and that of the goals that will be given to Corinthians FC.
