Wheelchair basketball teams announced

Wheelchair Basketball South Africa (WBSA) has announced the final squads for the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Paralympics qualifiers in Algeria.

WBSA chief executive officer, Mr Charles Saunders, said the men and women’s teams would leave at the end of this month.

He said the teams were ready to compete and showed improvements in the preparations towards these games.

“The two teams had a tight training schedule. They engaged in back-to-back training camps. That included an internal tour against the New Zealand Roller Blacks team. The teams are ready for the challenge ahead. The men’s team beat a New Zealand side that is ranked fourth in the Australasia Zone during an internal tour to South Africa, which was held from August 27 to September 6,” said Mr Saunders.

The Amawheelaboys, the men’s team, will be up against Algeria, Nigeria, Egypt, and Libya.

The Amawheelagirls, the women’s team, will face Algeria, Nigeria and Morocco.

The Amawheelaboys team will be led by the head coach, Franck Belen, and two of his assistant coaches, Shadrack Moepeng and Malcolm McLean, manager Melisa Koetjei and medical officer Claudia Lepera.

The players are Cecil Dumond, Kyle Louw, Lisolomzi Mazantsana, Tucker Beckett, Mpho Mooketsi, Simandla Gumbi, Steven Walgenbach, Rakgetsing Molete, Simanga Mbhele, Jack Mokgosi, Luvuyo Mbande, Richard Nortji and Arnold Moseya.

The Amawheelagirls team will be under its head coach, Willem Mulder. Its doctor is Sibusiso Ntuli and medical officer, Corrine Sheppard and the manager, Yoliswa Lumka.

Players are Mandisa Mkhungo, Katherine Swanepoel, Aviwe Ngoni, Zenande Mabanti, Dineo Mosime, Duduzile Gwaza, Misqah Kamaldien, Kelebogile Moeng, Lebohang Monyatsi, Masego Mokhine, Nonsindiso Zungu and Natasha Onono.
