SAVF Millennium Home closes its doors in December

December is the last day for SAVF Millennium Home for the Aged in Kensington.

The doors of SAVF Millennium Home for the Aged in Kensington will finally close in December.

According to the director of social services at SAVF, Mrs Marieta Kemp the home announced that it would close its doors due to the financial constraints.

The home is one of several SAVF homes around the country.

She said many of their residents have been moved to other SAVF homes.

“The process was delayed as our residents have specific needs. We have to accommodate their needs when we move them. Most of them are frail. A home we are moving them to must have skills and profession to care for them,” she said.

Mrs Kemp said another challenge slowing down the process was finances.

“We are closing because of financial reasons. Some of our residents cannot afford to pay what is due. As a result we fell short of about R3 000 to R4 000 per month per person. So when we are moving them, that home must be able to afford them. This has been one of the main causes of delays,” she said.

She said the home is trying to keep the new homes as familiar to the residents as possible.

“There are residents who have been staying together for years in our home. Where possible, we are trying to move them together and find them a home that will take them both,” she said.

She said the home will not close until all its residents have been moved to new homes.
