Matthew aims to out-drive the competition

Matthew, who was born and raised in Edenvale, has enjoyed the support of the community throughout his golfing career, which started at the age of 11.
Matthew is a student at Rhodes University in Grahamstown and was selected to represent Rhodes at the inter-university golf tournament which concludes on July 3.
The tournament started on June 28.
A number of universities participated in the event, including the University of Pretoria (TUKS), the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU).
The tournament was hosted at the Port Shepstone Golf Club in KwaZulu-Natal.
The aim of the tournament was to determine the best golfing university for 2015.
The 2014 winner of the competition was TUKS.
Matthew said, “I hope to change that and bring the trophy back to Rhodes.”
The selection for this team consisted of four rounds of golf, consisting of 18 holes each.
The top eight golfers with the best overall scores were selected to play in the tournament and Matthew was one of them.
“The Rhodes team consists of excellent golfers this year, with players who have represented their province and country in golf,” said Matthew.
“There are a number of former SA school golfers who are playing in the USSA week and this makes for a high standard of golf,” he said.
Matthew has loved golf from an early age and describes golf as his passion.
“I feel relaxed on a golf course. It is as if nothing else around me matters,” said Matthew.
Matthew advised other golfers to be patient.
“You need to have a strong mentality as it can really drain you at times. One shot can definitely ruin your round if you are not focused,” he said.
On the golf course, Matthew tells himself that his most important shot is the next one.
Matthew is a former member of the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club but currently plays for the Fish River Sun Golf Club in Port Alfred.
Matthew has represented St Benedict’s College at numerous events in the past and he hopes to one day turn professional.
He looks up to players such as Rory Mcilroy and left hander Phil Mickelson.
“I practice as often as I can and I aim to improve each day,” said Matthew.
According to Matthew, his golf game revolves around one quote by Gary Player, “The more I practice the luckier I get”.
