Sports stars view for prestigious awards

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) will roll out the red carpet to reward excellence and to appreciate the talent of sports stars who come from the EMM.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) will roll out the red carpet to reward excellence and to appreciate the talent of sports stars who come from the EMM.

The Ekurhuleni Annual Sports Awards will take place on May 27 at the Alberton Civic Hall. The ceremony will start at 6.30pm.

The EMM’s executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, will honour the sportsmen and women who represent South Africa on international stages.

Spokesperson for the EMM, Mr Themba Gadebe, said three nominees have been selected for each category and the winners will be announced during the ceremony.

Mr Gadebe said this year the interest showed by members of the public and various sports federations was overwhelming.

“The adjudicators were faced with a challenging task to select the finalists from the scores of nominations,” he said.

Three local finalists have made the cut for the finalists in seevral categories:

Outstanding Sport Official: Russell Ian Sim (Karate) from Edenvale.

Sportswoman of the Year (People with Disability); Lizette Uys (athletics) from Edenvale.

Sportswoman of the Year: Janine Van Wyk (football) from Edenvale.
