Mandeville makes waves

The Mandeville Lifesaving Club is making waves this season.

Apart from their usual patrols at open water swims and triathlons at the various dams around Gauteng and the Free State, the lifeguards compete in lifesaving galas to hone their skills and keep fit for duty.

The lifeguards, who range from 10 to 17 years of age, dominated the Johannesburg Championships earlier this year, bringing home a total of 42 medals.

The Mandeville Club recently competed in the Gauteng Championships in disciplines such as manikin carry, obstacle swim, rescue medley, open water swim, rescue board, line throw, Iron Man, Iron Lady and Super Lifesaver.

The event is split over three days and all of these skills are extremely taxing on the swimmers. Fitness is paramount to completing the events.

Mandeville took home 23 medals between the 11 participating swimmers.

10 members of the club will be travelling to Durban towards the end of April to participate in the SA National Championships.

Five of the Mandeville members have been selected to represent Gauteng, where they will face the best lifeguards from around South Africa.
