Residents urged to run for rare diseases

The Rare Disease Society of South Africa (RDSSA) is calling on the community to head down to the 2015 Rand Road Warriors Sarens Edenvale Marathon and Run for Rare Diseases.

The initiative will be held on March 8 at Edenvale High School and is aimed at raising funds and awareness to help children and adults with life threatening rare conditions.

Athletes and novices can partake in the fundraising event and make a difference by registering for the 5 kilometre, 10 kilometre, 21,1 kilometre or the 42,2 kilometre events.

The entry fees vary from R30 to R110 in accordance with the distance chosen.

Early entries close on February 28 with late registration taking place thereafter as well as on the day.

A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the RDSSA to assist patients with treatment costs, aid potential patients with rates associated with diagnosis as well as funding the development of rare disease specialists in South Africa.

“Rare disease patients form a minority of our society yet they receive little help or attention. Our acknowledgement and investment can make significant changes to their quality of life. With timely and accurate diagnosis and intervention, people with rare diseases can contribute significantly and positively towards society,” said Kelly du Plessis, chairperson of the RDSSA.

The event is recognised as a qualifying leg for other races across South Africa and the RDSSA is appealing to all applicants to join together for better care.
