Benoni Tigers: ‘We want that World Record’

The boys are ready for a 26 hour Action Cricket marathon this weekend.

It is time for action.

After months of planning, preparing and practising, the Benoni Tigers Action Cricket team will take on the daunting and physically brutal Guinness World Record attempt for the longest marathon playing indoor cricket, at the Benoni Action Arena, this weekend.

It is the first time that a record of this nature will be attempted and the Tigers are well aware that their attempt — from Saturday, September 20, into Sunday, September 21 — could forever etch their names in the famous book of man’s achievements.

After a 12-hour stint a few weeks ago, when they played 11 games on the trot at the Benoni Arena, the cricketers are ready to achieve their goal of 26 straight hours of playing the sport.

A squad of 16 (two teams of eight) will play numerous games in this time period, with only a five-minute break between games permitted.

Other logistics, such as witnesses, sponsorships and entertainment have all been finalised and everything is in place for an event that could be one of Benoni’s sporting highlights of the year.

There will also be other events during the course of the day, with the South African Men’s Open Action Cricket Team holding a training camp from 9am on Saturday, while the record attempt will officially start at noon, with SuperSport’s Let’s Play initiative recording proceedings from 11.30am.

The South African players will also assist and coach the Benoni West Primary School u-11 cricket team at 1pm.

Another interesting game on the day will be the match between the current South African women’s outdoor cricketers and the 2011 South African Women’s Action Cricket Team.

There will also an After Dark cricket, netball and volleyball tournament from 11pm on Saturday night, as well as many other events from Saturday into Sunday.

Music and entertainment will ensure fun for the whole family, while DJs Dr T (5pm to 8pm), Will (8pm to 10pm) and Mark Stent will play during the evening’s happenings.
