Animal lovers take to the roads

Runners, Hazel Moller and Eric Wright will take on the daunting task of running for two days to raise funds for abused and abandoned animals.

Hazel, a member of the Bedfordview Athletics Club and Eric, a member of the New Balance Running Club, hope to raise R70 000 for various animal rescue organisations.

The two endurance athletes will take on the Washie 100 Miler run, twice.

The event is run annually from Port Alfred to East London and will this year take place on July 19.

Hazel and Eric will double the distance of the marathon when they set out to run the marathon twice.

They will start the first leg of their race on July 18, one day ahead of the official start of the race.

They will then have 52 hours to complete a total distance of 320 kilometres.

Hazel has completed 13 Comrades Marathons and 21 Washie 100 Miler marathons while Eric has completed 33 Comrades Marathons and 24 Washie 100 Miler marathons.

Hazel and Eric have selected Kensington-based Pet Finda, Pet Empowerment in Townships (PETS) Witbank and Cape Town as well as Burrows Rescue as beneficiaries of their run.

Those who want to support the initiative and help the two runners reach their goal of R70 000 can make donations via the Back-A-Buddy website by visiting www.backabuddy.co.za/washies100-miler
