Jozi Triathlon to be bigger and better

While the number of entries last year exceeded what they expected, Gibson shared Gore’s sentiments that they learnt many lessons, adding they are ready because the event will be bigger and better.

The organiser of the SEESA Jozi Triathlon, Glen Gore, promised this year’s event would be bigger and better and a memorable experience for all participants.

This annual event’s second instalment will again be at the CR Swart Dam on September 28.

It debuted to a good reception from locals and triathletes from across the province, including professionals Rudolf Naude and Alessandro Fanicchi, at the same venue last October.

The inaugural event drew many first-timers, who took on the super-sprint challenge. The advanced participated in the sprint distance, with the pros tackling the standard distance, which included a 1.5km swim, a 40km cycle and a 10km run.

Gore said the lessons from that ‘exciting’ event were plenty, and he hopes to make this one a ‘memorable experience’ for all participants.

“We are returning bigger and better this year,” said Gore.

“We learnt a lot from last year and hope to make this triathlon a memorable experience for everyone.

“The sponsors are keen. We are also keen, and by the interest shown in our return to Benoni this year, the athletes are definitely keen. We are ready for them,” Gore added.

Long-distance swimmer Tommy Gibson of the Benoni Open Water Swimming was hands-on assisting with the preparations.

While the number of entries last year exceeded what they expected, Gibson shared Gore’s sentiments that they learnt many lessons, adding they are ready because the event will be bigger and better.

“Last year was an amazing success. In fact, it was over-subscribed, so we learnt many lessons. It seems like there’s a need for an event like this,” said Gibson.

He added, “One could say last year was as a test. This year, the expectation will be bigger and better and possibly grow in the future.”

Gibson debuted as a 73-year-old last year.

Of his experience, he said it was fantastic and encouraged community members of all fitness levels to try it, especially the short super-sprint distance.

He had intended to tackle the standard distance, but the recent flu outbreak affected his training. He said he would stick to the sprint distance, joking that he hopes to survive it.

“Last year, I did it as a challenge. The gees vibe and activity is amazing as there are always activities, with competitors coming in and going out,” he said.
