Edenvale Panthers prepare for finals

After the August 24 match the Panthers roared with pride.

Edenvale Panthers secured their place in the Valke Kestrel League finals after beating Vanderbijlpark.

On August 24, the teams faced off at Edenvale Sportsgrounds.

They observed a moment of silence before the game in honour of one of Vanderbijl’s players who passed away.

With both teams giving their all to secure a spot in the finals, Edenvale Panthers’ first team won 39-17.

Edenvale scored five tries, two penalties and four conversions.

Following their victory, the Panthers will play against Delmas Phoenix.

Speaking about the semi-final game, Panthers chairperson Ernie Enslin said the teams stormed out of the gates and were on the attack from the start.

He said the Panthers’ defence was excellent, and their morale was high.

“It was the best game of the season so far.”

He said every player demonstrated why they were members of the team.

The Panthers’ man of the match was vice-captain of the day Raymond Cara.

“It was a complete team effort and team members who scored points included Dean Nel (two), Mac Khumalo (one) and Ben Fwamba (two) while Granville Engelbrecht succeeded with four conversions and two penalties,” said Enslin.

Describing this year’s journey through the Kestrel League Enslin said it was one of brotherhood and camaraderie.

“It was one for all and all for one. Additionally, we all did this in honour and thankfulness of God for our talents and his blessings on the club.

He said one highlight of this year’s league was the camaraderie of the team and the support of each player, the coaches and management.

With the club in the finals, Enslin said the club and its members are ecstatic.

He said after the August 24 match, the Panthers roared with pride.

“Music was playing loud and everybody had a good braai and beverages as everyone had a story to tell of their part of the game,” said Enslin.

With the finals around the corner, Enslin said the club hopes to achieve its goal of winning the league and the cup.

“This goal is one we had since the beginning of the season. From the start, we said the season will be played in the spirit of good sportsmanship and try our best to prevent injuries.”

Edenvale’s Panthers will play in the final at 14:00 on September 7 at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park.

Other teams which will face off on the day include NWU’s second team against Vereeniging and Brakpan’s first team against Vereeniging.

“We invite all our supporters to support us on the day,” said Enslin.

An entrance fee of R20 per car and R20 per person will be charged.
