BCC cricket club still betting strong

Bedfordview Edenvale News caught up with Shane Savage, chairperson of the Bedfordview Country Club cricket division to reflect on success and what can be expected in the upcoming season.

Savage is also the chairperson of the club.

BCC cricket had an incredible last season, with nine junior teams and eight seniors competing in the winter league.

The pinnacle of the summer season came with the premier side clinching the league title and earning a spot at the club champs, where they competed against the best from various provinces. They lost in the finals to the University of Pretoria (Tuks).

The club’s senior veterans also showcased their talents when they won the Jozi Cup with the final held at Wanderers Stadium.

BCC is gearing up for the summer season with preparations starting in mid-August. Registration will open around then and the club is keen to welcome new players, especially those in the U8 to U14 age groups.

Savage emphasised that BCC is dedicated to nurturing young talent and providing opportunities for all, including underprivileged children, ensuring they have the necessary equipment and support to thrive.

“We focused on growth and development. Cricket stands out as a sport because it blends individual skill with team dynamics.

“You’re out on the field as an individual, but at the same time, it’s a team sport. You need that balance to succeed, and that’s what makes cricket special,” he explained.

The club trains on Fridays from 16:00 to 18:00 at BCC.

New registrations will be followed by trials, where players are assessed and placed into appropriate teams. Players are trained by qualified coaches.

Savage invites the community to explore the facilities at BCC, highlighting that the club is committed to sports and community upliftment.

They offer bowling, soccer, tennis, cricket and athletics.

BCC cricket shows no sign of slowing down.
