Local players take part in tennis winter league

Bedfordview A were runners-up and Sunward Park A clinched the women’s premier league, beating Selection Park A to the title.

The Benoni Country Club (BCC) men’s senior team captain Ayrton Vermaak was delighted after leading his side to the Gauteng East Tennis Association (GETA) Winter League Men’s Premier League title.

Vermaak attributed the win to teamwork, saying he was impressed with how the team performed and he’s happy to be part of BCC.

The skipper thanked his teammates, Neal Redfern, Jason Harris, Kevin Kockott, Ian Kleynhans and 15-year-old Borys Alexander for their consistency and commitment during the competition.

“Thank you to all my team members, starting with Neal Redfern who played in all matches and definitely got us the wins to take the league.Jason Harris didn’t lose any of his singles matches.

“Thanks to Kevin Kockott and Ian Kleynhans for playing when we needed them. We couldn’t have done it without them.

The Merrylyn women’s A team’s Sophia Koen, Lenie Simmonds and Angelique Jansen van Vuuren.

“Lastly, a big thank you to our youngster, Borys Alexander, who, at 15, showed the veterans a thing or two,” said Vermaak.

Bedfordview B beat Atlasville Tennis Club’s B side to the men’s Gold League title while Merrylyn A, from Edenvale, beat Atlasville A to the women’s trophy.

Merrylyn A won the men’s Saturday League, beating runners-up Sunward Park A.

The league started in May and featured mixed and singles teams from various clubs from around the region.
