The second Vale Tournament was a success – Elba

“As an academy, we are happy with our results, both Elba teams played very well.”

Edenvale Lions Basketball Academy recently hosted its second successful TVT activation.

Held on May 25 and 26 at the Lion’s home court at Edenvale Sports Grounds, the event took place in preparation for The Vale Tournament that the ELBA will host in November.

Coach and co-founder of the academy Edson Makavan described it as one of the best and well-organised tournaments.

The tournament, which catered for U19, U23 and senior players, attracted 27 teams including the Germiston Vultures.

Makavan said Saturday was the selection day and saw teams compete in a round robin knock-out style while Sunday was reserved for the finals.

Lion Queens took victory in the U19 category, Six-Foot Mentality claimed gold in the U23 age group while the Half Court Bandits walked away with victory in the senior category.

Elba’s U23 and senior team both placed second in their respective age groups.

Speaking about the academy’s performance, Makavan said there were no complaints.

“Elba teams played very well. In life, it’s always possible that there may be someone better than you.

“Unfortunately, there is only one first position,” said Makavan.

He said achieving a podium position was a great achievement for both teams.

The main sponsor, FNB, provided financial literacy and empowered players and community members who attended the event.

Discussing the academy’s preparedness for its November TVT to be played at Ellis Park Arena, Makavan said the academy is 95% ready.

“We are definitely on the right track, the ways things are going and how all of the partners have come together is motivating.

“People have realised that this is going to be a reality and we are excited to host the biggest basketball tournament in SA and Africa.”

He said although the two ELBA teams secured silver in this tournament, Edson is confident that the teams will grow in strength and be ready to face their opposition at the November TVT.

Following the May Activation event, Makavan said Elba will host a third activation TVT in partnership with Alexander Basketball Association.

Having worked closely with the Alex association, Makavan said the two clubs constantly support one another.

He added that Edenvale Imps and Giants Baseball Club made a donation of T-shirts and caps to the Alexander Basketball Association on May 20.

Makavan said this was special as it was a donation from one sporting code to another, something that highlights the strength between clubs and academies no matter the sporting code.
