Local paddlers test their endurance for Dusi Canoe Marathon

They finished the event in 13 hours 31 minutes, covering 120 km over the three days, including some portages.

Victoria Lake paddlers participated in the Dusi Canoe Marathon that was held from February 15 to 17.

This world’s toughest canoe endurance event has taken place annually, between Pietermaritzburg and Durban in February since the 1960s when it was first explored by Ian Player after World War II.

Deon Vermaak took on the challenging marathon with partner Craig Johnston.

They finished the event in 13 hours 31 minutes, covering 120 km over the three days, including some portages.

The pair finished as the 163rd K2 (two-man kayak) and 19th in the sub-master age category.

VLC paddler Chad Andrews, who is also a partner at Canoe Concepts in Edenvale, paddled with John Greeff to finish the Dusi as the 13th veteran in a time of 12 hours 26 minutes, finishing as the 146th K2.

Ryan Booysen and Robert Hamer teamed up once again to finish the race in 15 hours and two minutes and 14th in the veteran age group.

Other VLC paddlers who finished the three-day challenging endurance event included Rick Diesel from Edenvale with partner Bevan Manson. The pair was 10th in the veteran age category and 124th in the K2 double kayak group.

Michael Sears and Gareth Sears were 11th in the veteran category in a time of 11 hours 54 minutes.
