2023 a great year for Edenvale Bowling Club

“There were several standout performances and contributions from individuals as well as teams.”

With the start of the new season, the Edenvale Bowling Club (EBC) described this year as an exceptional one for the club.

The new season began on the weekend of October 14 and 15.

The club was named Ekurhuleni bowls club of the year for the second consecutive year.

According to EBC communications committee member Raymond Pieters, Edenvale has won the prestigious award five times in the last 10 years.

“The achievements will be a hard act to follow,” said Pieters.

He said the bowling club entered eight leagues ranging from premier to third division, including men’s and ladies’ leagues.

The club reached the play-off stages in five leagues. It won three and was runner-up in one.

Currently, Edenvale has nine Ekurhuleni district players.

Pieters said the EBC had produced many district and Protea players over the years.

“There were several standout performances and contributions from individuals and teams. Younger bowlers are showing they can compete at the highest level,” he said.

The awards the club and its members received were presented at the Ekurhuleni Bowls (EKB) AGM on October 1.

Some of the awards they received included SA Masters singles runner-up presented to Mathews Phiri, EKB veteran runner-up presented to Martin Muller, the winners of the ladies EKB fours category, the winners of the men’s pairs category and the winners of the mixed pairs category.

Pieters said Richard Lowe and Dawn Buchanan coached many of the club’s novices.

“These two were honoured at the EKB AGM for their excellent work in getting new bowlers onto the greens.”
Edenvale offers free coaching on Saturday mornings to anyone interested.

“Bowling is one of the few sports where men and women of all ages can compete equally. It is truly a sport for all,” said Pieters.

The youngest member at the EBC is 12.

Membership is available to new and experienced bowlers.

Since the club’s establishment in 1956, the EBC has become a well-known venue for hosting family, corporate and team-building days. Email secretary@edenvalebowls.co.za for any enquiries.
