Local youngster earns a black belt

Jaiden Maharaj walks away with his black belt in karate.

International Shotokan Karate Federation (South Africa), under the auspices of sensei San Pillay, held their grading ceremony on June 2 in Pretoria.

Jaiden Maharaj (11) walked away with his black belt in karate.

Maharaj, a Grade Six learner at Edenglen Primary School, has been practising karate since he was six. He excelled through his beginner belts, all with continued support and guidance from Pillay.

Maharaj is now practising for the national championships on September 2 at the Tongaat Sports Centre in KwaZulu-Natal.

He is also active in soccer and represents Edenglen Primary School U12.

Pillay’s dojo is located in High Road, Eastleigh. Classes are every Monday and Wednesday, starting at 17:30.
