Pink Proteas to fight breast cancer

JOBURG – Proteas will be in pink at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium on 4 February to raise funds for breast cancer awareness.

South Africa’s premier breast cancer fighter, PinkDrive will be the major beneficiary at the third Momentum One-Day International (ODI) which takes place at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium on 4 February between the Proteas and Sri Lanka.

PinkDrive is an organisation committed to improving breast cancer education and awareness through fundraising efforts such as the dressing of the Proteas team in pink for one of their ODIs every year to raise funds.

Standard Bank, Bidvest and Momentum, the commercial partners of Cricket South Africa, have pledged varying amounts of money that will be donated to PinkDrive when certain achievements on the field are accomplished by the Proteas.

Bidvest will donate R1 000 for every boundary scored and team sponsors, Standard Bank, will donate R10 000 for every catch taken in the match. Momentum will donate R100 000 when a batsman manages to hit the ball into the big inflatable Momentum ‘M’ in the stands and a further R10 000 for every six hit into the Momentum family area.

Fans, on the other hand, will not be left out in the PinkDrive fundraising efforts as they can also show their support by donating R20 by sending an SMS to 40158 with the keyword ‘cricket’.

Fans from beyond the South African borders can contribute to the cause by making a contribution via GivenGain on their website  or by visiting the PinkDrive website for more options.

Speaking at the launch of the PinkDrive ODI, Cricket South Africa CEO, Haroon Lorgat described the Pink ODI event at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium as a big occasion for Cricket SA. “This makes us proud to support initiatives of raising awareness and mobilising cricket fans to also support the PinkDrive campaign,” he said.

“PinkDrive is one of our foremost social programmes which prove how sport can play a broader role in communities and society at large in fighting the breast cancer pandemic.”
