Wheelie bin theft worries resident

“As much as we encourage residents to clearly mark their bins, this has hardly deterred thieves from stealing them.”

EDITOR – I live in the Avenues in Edenvale, and my daughter lives in Edenglen.
In the space of two weeks, both of our wheelie bins have been stolen.
Coincidentally, the thefts occurred on the day of refuse collection by the municipality.
The recyclers are also very busy on these days.
Whoever the criminals are, we are left binless and if we need a replacement, we need to go to the police station, report the theft and sign an affidavit (horrors).
My garden man said he thinks the bins are being stolen and sold in the townships.
These thefts are carried out in spite of the fact that the owner’s address is clearly marked on the bin.
Could the municipality ask the EMPD to investigate and apprehend these criminals?
From Disgusted.
EDITOR’S COMMENT – A request for comment was sent to the City of Ekurhuleni.
CoE replied: “Unfortunately, this problem is prevalent in most parts of the city.
“As much as we encourage residents to clearly mark their bins, this has hardly deterred thieves from stealing them.
“This defeats the City’s efforts to keep Ekurhuleni clean, fight illegal dumping and fight off rodents among many hygiene interventions.
“However, ideas on how we can curb the theft are much appreciated and welcomed. The city will not hesitate to try them out because these thefts are hindering the development of the city and hampering our efforts to provide a clean and healthy environment for our people.
“Indeed, in some instances, municipal officials have confiscated some of the bins, which are mainly found in the possession of individuals using them to transport various private goods and things.”
