Anger over use of fireworks

Forego the exploding fireworks and do something different; there are other options.

EDITOR – On New Year’s eve I listened to the explosion of fireworks mixed with the barking of dogs that were petrified out of their minds.

And again, as I do every year, I wonder why? Why do we have to set off exploding fireworks that scare the living hell out of every animal within firing range?

When will people get just how distressing exploding fireworks are and care enough to decide not to use them again, law or no law. Come on man, give a damn. We should not be subjected to these mindless explosions and no animal deserves to be terrorised by exploding fireworks. It is not right. It’s the year 2018 and there is definitely more than one way of celebrating.

It is time to change the mindset. Forego the exploding fireworks and do something different; there are other options. Things do need to change and the use of exploding fireworks does need to stop but nothing is going to change by having the same conversation year after year. So how do we make that happen? How do we instill or awaken human decency?

There must be many things we can do. A start would be to educate children about the damage that fireworks cause so they can go home and educate their parents. Perhaps staff from the various SPCA associations together with staff from the various vets as well as paramedics who have attended to injured people could get together to give talks at their local schools. It’s only a start but a start is what change needs.

Educated children will be where the next idea on how to celebrate without fireworks will come from. It’s time to move on from fireworks to something more fitting for the times in which we live.
