Reader shares useful water saving ideas

If we all do this one simple thing, the water shortage shouldn't be a massive problem.

EDITOR- In light of the recent water shortages, I’d like to share some water saving tips.

The toilet is one of the most water-intensive products in the home.

The average toilet uses between 10 and 27 litres, depending on various factors of usage.

Here are a few ways to minimize water usage in your toilets:

Place a brick, or a half-brick, in the cistern. It allows the cistern to fill up quicker without using more water.

Only flush the toilet after every second number one but always after a number two.

Use grey water to fill the cistern. It is amazing how much grey water gets let down the drain.

Using grey water from one load of dishes, I was able to get 15 litres. From one bath filled up to about 10cm, I managed to get 30 litres.

If one calculates the saving on just this 45 litres a day, it equates to a saving of 1.5 KL a month per household.

If we all do this one simple thing, the water shortage shouldn’t be a massive problem.
