EDITOR – Mourning domestic workers said goodbye to the loved nanny, Ms Beauty Makhoba.
On Friday, August 21 at Edenglen Primary School, the murmurs of over 50 mourning domestic workers could be heard.
They were there to pay their last respects to a colleague, friend and sister.
They sang songs of praise and worship as they awaited the arrival of Ms Makhoba. When she arrived, they sang the song, “The soldier we walked with, fell here” as they placed her casket where she took her last breath.
Some may not understand why this was done. This is an African tradition. When someone passes away in ‘foreign’ land (land not of their ancestors); their spirit needs to be ‘fetched’ before the body can be escorted to its final resting place. It is also another opportunity for those who are unable to attend the funeral of the deceased, to pay their last respects.
They shared memories which they will forever cherish. Her employer could not hold back the tears because he has lost Ms Makhoba, who was part of their family.
Beauty has truly left a gap, that could never be filled. She dedicated her life to serve. She served with excellence and diligence.
Her smile will be forever missed and her presence forever treasured.
Beauty Makhoba was baried on Saturday, August 15, in her home town of Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal.
