Community and sponsors thanked

The combined efforts of all ensured a dramatic improvement of the Homestead building despite not having completed all of the painting and the surrounding grounds of the park.

EDITOR – The success of the Mandela Day ’67 minutes’ can only be attributed to the wonderful support from the broader community and to the many contributors who offered help in abundance.

This year we had a bumper ‘Mandela Day weekend ‘ of activity as we had a vast amount of unavoidable preparation that needed to be done to the Homestead, which was done on Saturday, July 18.

We ended the day with a bring ‘n braai and a bonfire, with campfire singing which was expertly built by the 1st Wychwood Scouts.

On Sunday, July 19, it was full steam ahead with painting, raking and cleaning of our Heritage site which was exhausting and rewarding for all.

Once again, the numbers of volunteers who came down to the park to contribute their time, exceeded our expectations.

There were numerous people who worked on both days and a special mention must be made of the Eastleigh Sea Scouts; Cutty Sark Scouts and 1st Wychwood Scouts who attended in their numbers with great energy and excitement.

The combined efforts of all ensured a dramatic improvement of the Homestead building despite not having completed all of the painting and the surrounding grounds of the park.

Thank you and well done to all of the volunteers.

Without our sponsors this type of event would not have been as successful and we would like to say a very sincere thank you to all of our sponsors: Paint Trade Meadowdale, Manny de Freitas for the very generous donation of all of the paint, Mamba Security, Dominique Munro, Kevin Norman and crew for the contribution of Certificates of Participation, guarding and ongoing support of clean-ups, Karaglen Spar and Tiles 4 Change for the donation of the Weber Braai for the raffle, Urban Spoon Catering, Bianca, Marc and Glenda for the generous donation of 67 boerie rolls and 67 Hot dogs, De Bakery and Mark Verhoogt for the rolls, Edenvale Rotary Club and Louise and her team for the bacon and cheese rolls, Puljevic family for garbage bags, CPF and Linda McKenzie for the supply of posters and arranging the additional trolley bins and Edenvale Firemen to be on standby for the bonfire, Cash donations from Carol Rogers and Henry Sole, Legend Hire and Paul Jukes for the standby generator, Richard Lewarne who worked tirelessly for three months upgrading the jungle gym for his Springbok Scouters badge, I Love Edenvale and Michelle Robertson, Edenvale Radio Station and Rourke Lessing and staff for the outside broadcast, Ward 18 and 19 Clrs Heather Hart and Bill Rundle for their ongoing unconditional support and EMM, and Hendrick Raedani and team for the supply of electricity, Bedfordview and Edenvale News for reporting our plight and last but not least, Graeme Woods for his enthusiasm and immense support he afforded this project.

Friends of Horwood Farm volunteers will continue to complete the painting of the Homestead on September 6 and during our regular monthly clean-ups between 9am to 12pm on the second Saturday of each month.

We look forward to working with the members of the community who offered their assistance on an ongoing basis.
