Men encouraged to go for regular check-ups

JOBURG – The City of Johannesburg encourages men to go for regular health check-ups.

June is Men’s health month, a month that is often overlooked by many of us, though men are usually breadwinners and are the heads of households.

They generally feel that they cannot afford to stay away from work and don’t usually go for medical check-ups. It could also be difficult to exercise regularly as time may not permit, and eating healthily could be out of the equation.

The whole aim of Men’s Health Month is to increase awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men.

Regular screening can detect diseases and other potential illnesses, especially after the age of 40. Men should seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury or if they think that something does not feel right.

What medical procedures are done for men?

  • Men should get screened for prostate cancer. Certain studies have reported that one in eight men is diagnosed with prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is usually a slow-growing cancer, although there are some aggressive types. Screening is important as one will be able to identify early even before symptoms begin. There are two types of testing for prostate cancer – a blood test to test raised prostate hormones (PSA), and a rectal examination.
  • Blood pressure tests are important as we age. It is also influenced by unhealthy lifestyles and improper weight management.
  • High cholesterol is a big contributing factor to heart attacks. Cholesterol should also be tested on a regular basis.
  • Exercise and good eating habits are essential to combat cholesterol. A doctor can also advise on the best treatment if your cholesterol levels are high.
  • Men should also screen for diabetes. Limit alcohol and foods high in sugar content. Leading a healthier lifestyle is one of the ways of preventing preventable diseases such hypertension and diabetes.
  • Stress is also a major cause of chronic diseases and impotence. Some of the best ways to relieve stress and improve health are exercise, eat and sleep well, find the root of your stress, avoid stress when possible, and don’t take on things you can’t handle.

Exercise can also be a good stress reliever. Eating healthily and sleeping six to eight hours a night helps the body recover from stress. Eat smaller meals instead of one large meal in the day.

Note that your local clinic offers free testing for BP, glucose and prostate cancer screening. Contact your nearest clinic for further advice and information.

Men play a significant role in our communities, so please ensure that regular check-ups are done and that you take care of your health.
