Mrs Vee’s cup of words

Serve the people

‘Service delivery, service delivery’ is all you hear from the mouths of community members.

Unfortunately, these cries are all about the lack thereof.

This concerns me as it means that some ward councillors are failing the people.

When political parties campaigned, they promised the public better service delivery and after being voted into their positions, some councillors are now using excuses again.

Councillors, when you campaigned did you understand the challenges faced within the wards and that disadvantaged areas seem to suffer more from lack of service delivery?

I’m not accusing councillors of not serving the people, but maybe they need to consider new strategies because the one’s they are currently employing are not working. People continue to lose all hope of a better life when simple services such as removing refuse, cutting down tree branches and fixing water leaks are not done.

The community is being asked to work with councillors, but how can the community support them when they only seem to serve a select few.

I hope serving the community was the driving force behind every councillor’s decision to stand in the election – so please serve the people.

You will only receive the community’s support when people see your efforts and that you are actually trying to improve their living conditions. As a councillor, you need to be with your people every day to understand the challenges they face.

The community is your office and this means facing difficult situations that will require you to think like a community member before thinking like a councillor.

Councillors need to come together to find ways to improve their communities.

Remember the people put you in this position, so they must come first – #peoplefirst.
