Professional wedding advice from Van Basten

The date, cake, flowers, photographers, dresses and venues, the list is never ending when it comes to planning a wedding. Well-known author, Stephen van Basten, shares his advice on what to do after you are engaged.

In his book, titled ‘So you’re engaged, now what?’ Van Basten suggests that couples ask their minister what his policy is on photography.

“Too many couples have spent a fortune on a photographer only to find that the minister tells them to put the cameras away during his service,” he said.

He adds that couples should create an email address for their wedding and use that whenever they are asked by suppliers for their email address.

“When you find a supplier you like, book them and pay the deposit.

“There are only 52 Saturdays in a year and we get booked quickly,” said Van Basten.

He said some suppliers are booked 18 months in advance.

According to him, couples should take the advice professionals give them.

“We have been in the industry for years and we have learnt what works through trial and error.”

He strongly advises the use of a wedding planner and for couples to get their wills updated at the same time as drawing up their ante-nuptial agreement.

“If you can afford to do a relationship course before you get married, do it. If you cannot afford it, see if you can pay it off monthly or do it after you are married and back on your feet,” said Van Basten.

Choose your master of ceremonies very carefully.

“You want someone who knows everyone, can speak well but will not dominate the evening, he just needs to keep the evening going.”

He said that couples must make sure they use a DJ who has experience playing at weddings.

“A wedding is incredibly difficult to manage as there are ages and tastes varying from 10 to 90.

“Ask for their back-up plan if equipment is faulty or if the DJ is ill,” said Van Basten.

When choosing a venue, the reception hall may be more important than the chapel.

“Remember, you will spend an hour in the chapel and the entire evening at the reception. Find a venue where you can have a great party.”

He suggested that couples ensure they have two photographers at the wedding.

“When the bride walks into the chapel, one takes pictures of her while the other catches the groom’s reaction,” he said.

Van Basten suggested that one should try to get a copy of the minister’s sermon and give their input into it.

“See if you can create your own, unique ceremony together.”

The greatest cause of divorce is money, so get a good financial advisor.

“Whatever happens on the day, forget about your weight and enjoy your wedding.

“Remember that your partner married you for your heart and soul, they love and accept you as you are.”
