Musings of a mad sub

Kids are punching and shooting teachers, crime is 'reducing' and government is dead-set to implement a tolling system no one wants, nor asked for.

It’s a funny old country we live in. Sometimes I barely recognise it as being a so-called functioning society.

I mean, kids are punching and shooting teachers, crime is ‘reducing’ and government is dead-set to implement a tolling system no one wants, nor asked for.

Ministers are stealing tax payers’ money, but making promises to help the poor. Ministers get motorcades with fancy lights, but are exempt from traffic laws. We have ministers who claim to be proud of South Africa’s development under democracy, but send their children to elitist private schools.

We have a president who has been investigated in how-many criminal cases, but he urges tolerance. We kill foreigners because they ‘take our jobs’, but we will strike for over two weeks.

We want increases, but our strike action causes inflation levels to rise. We implement a tolling system for our roads, but send the bulk of the money to a company based in Europe. We have large portions of our population living in abject poverty, but we spend billions on jet fighters – which we cannot fly as they are too expensive. Added to this, despite the disgusting living conditions in informal settlements, our illustrious leader gives the poor the middle-finger and builds a palace for himself in Nkandla. Then gets the Air Force to fly him in an out of his palace, despite the need for jet fuel to fly our awesome new jet fighters.

Am I the only one who sees a problem here? We are the rape capital of the world and ministers go giddy when there is a 0.0000001 percent decrease in crime. Never mind that many do not report crimes owing to a severe lack of trust in the police. I don’t know about you guys out there, but this really grates my… roast chicken. I’m sick of self-serving individuals who milk the very people who pay their salaries. And the really sad part? There are some people who are truly amazing – but get tarnished with the same brush dipped in poo.

So what can we do? I don’t know – I’m just a columnist. I point out other people’s faults while ignoring my own. So kind of like a politician, I guess. No wonder people don’t like the media. But at least we try to expose the rubbish. At least we try inform people of what is going on.

So where does the blame lie? It lies on all of us. Every single person who has ever cast a vote. We believe the nonsense spouted from the various political parties. Well, at least some people – nearly 60 percent of the voting nation apparently. We, the voters, have the power to effect change. We really do. The question is, is South Africa truly ready for whole-sale change? Could we really imagine South Africa without the ANC in power? Are we ready for that?

There was a time when the ANC was the answer to our country’s cries. Now, it would seem they are the cause of our country’s cries. To be perfectly honest, I don’t care if my president is black or white, male or female. Just do the damn job we pay you to do. And the same goes for the ministers. I’m fairly confident I am not the only South African who is of this opinion.

So with this in mind, I am pleading with people to begin voting with their brains. Hold your elected officials accountable. And for the love of all that’s good and holy, don’t allow them to pull the wool over your eyes.

To those elected officials trying to do good and make a difference – thank you.

To those sods milking the people of this country – you make me sick.

That’s all for this week folks, perhaps next week will be lighter – I’ll give my Magic 8 Ball a shake and see… Oh, wait, it says, “Try again later.”
