Readers have their say about mental health awareness

Does society know enough about mental health?

July is Mental Health Awareness Month.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) wants to create awareness to encourage people to seek help, treatment and support.

Does society know enough about mental health?

Fatima Reetseng said, “No, society still needs to be educated on mental illness, especially the families who have a member living with mental illness. More awareness needs to be raised so that they can care for people living with mental illness and be more involved in their recovery process.”
Nqobile Moyo said, “No, society is not well educated about people living with mental illness. They still need to understand what mental illness is and how to handle people living with it in order to support them.”
Nomfundo Luthuli said,”Yes, society does know about mental illness to an extent. They do not support awareness campaigns where they can learn more about the illness. There is still room for improvement to be more informed because we have people living with mental illness in our society and people don’t know how to relate to them. They need to know how they can offer support to them.”
