Should billboards be allowed on highways?

With the recent hullabaloo around the erection of an enormous billboard at Gillooly's Farm and its distraction to road users, the NEWS asked residents if they thought billboards should be allowed on highways

Following the outcry about the the erection of an enormous billboard at Gillooly’s Farm and its distraction to road users, the NEWS asked residents if billboards should be allowed on highways.

Sipho Nkosi said, “Yes, they are a way of informing the public and communicating with them – they don’t distract. They only distract if you can’t drive.”
John Hudson said, “A billboard is advertising, free speech and so forth. What I don’t like are very large billboards on freeways because they are very distracting.”
Given Maphosa said, “They are a distraction. You look at them then miss something on the road and before you know it, you’re in an accident.”
Sizwe Mazibuko said, “Yes, they are another way the public is informed about new products.”
