Motorist feels threatened by aggressive windscreen washers

'I believe this is a tactic to target woman to lure them to a spot to attack them.'

EDITOR – I would like to raise my concern about the aggressiveness of the windscreen washers at the intersection of Greenstone mall and Van Riebeeck Avenue.

These guys will not take “no” for an answer.

They are incredibly intimidating and aggressive. They are using a liquid that is oily, which makes it difficult to see through and causes you to pull over.

I believe this is a tactic to target woman to lure them to a spot to attack them.

I was threatened by one of them where he used a throat slitting action as a direct threat after I used pepper spray to get him away from my car.

At the garage across the road where I had to stop to clean my windscreen, they told me the Metro Police was called and the windscreen washers dispersed. However after 30 minutes they were back in the same spot intimidating drivers. These guys need to be dealt with as death threats should not be dealt with lightly. But it doesn’t seem to be of any concern to the police or security in the area.

WORRIED TAX PAYING CITIZEN,

MISS TRUTER.

EDITOR’S COMMENT – Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar commented as follows:

The issue of windscreen washers is a big problem because windscreen washing is treated as a B crime, which means it is not regarded as a serous offence.

When the windscreen washers are arrested, they are taken to the the police station where they are given a fine or warning.

The reason why windscreen washers go back to the intersection is because of the people who continue to give them money.

If people stopped giving money to them, they would not see any reason to go back to that intersection.

If anyone is assaulted by the window-washers, they must go and report it at the police station and the law must take its course.
