GOOD NEWS: Shopper touched by security guard’s kindness

"His name is Harrison. I hope one day I can return the gesture to him in a time of need, but more importantly, I thank him for the hope in humanity he has given me."

“I wanted to share a good news story with the hope of it being published, but I am not sure how to do so.

A few weeks ago, while shopping at the Karaglen Spar, I found myself in the embarrassing situation whereby my groceries had already passed through the pay point, only to discover that I had left my purse at home. I immediately began panicking and was highly embarrassed, as there was a queue behind me and some rather agitated looking people.

Thankfully, I noticed the owner was there at this late hour, and as I frequent this Spar on a daily basis and the owner knows me, I knew he would let me come and pay the following day.

However, in the interim and much to my shock, one of the car guards recognised me and offered to pay for me.

I was immediately taken aback and touched by the gesture. I was more touched by the fact that he is from the Congo, and in light of the xenophobic violence, this was all the more touching.

I responded by thanking him but I could not take his money as I was unsure when I would see him again due to their irregular hours.

The fact that these men live hand to mouth was of no concern to him; his only concern was to help me.

His response to me was, ‘I am your friend, and therefore I can help you.’

If only we all had this attitude to one another. Perhaps those involved in the xenophobia attacks should take a leaf out of his book.

His name is Harrison. I hope one day I can return the gesture to him in a time of need, but more importantly, I thank him for the hope in humanity he has given me.”
