Reddam House learner raises funds to start orchestra

Supported by her family, Milan Ramsunder undertook the mammoth task of securing the required resources for the orchestra.

Reddam House Bedfordview has introduced its first orchestra, the Reddam Philharmonic.

Grade Eight learner and flautist Milan Ramsunder drove the initiative.

Despite Reddam’s thriving music department, it did not have an orchestra.

Milan, having captained an orchestra previously, desperately wanted to share the orchestral experience with her fellow music learners.

Supported by her family, she undertook the mammoth task of securing the required resources for the school orchestra.

When performing at a corporate event, Milan approached various business people and shared her dream of starting an orchestra.

Being inspired by her passion, various business people offered donations.

Spencer Harvey (The Only Music Shop) helped Milan buy the necessary instruments, and the school now boasts woodwind, string, brass and percussion instruments.

“Music unites people of different backgrounds. It creates a haven where people can express and nurture their musical talent. Music is one of the cores of our being.

It brings us together as a community,” said Milan.

The goal is to allow the learners to develop their skills and talents and have a safe space to grow as individuals.

Milan will work alongside the music teacher Natasha Hooton to nurture the orchestra and its members.

Reddam’s motto is We Shall Give Back, and the orchestra will look for ways to serve the school and the community.

The school has thanked Milan, the Ramsunder family and the generous donors who made this dream possible.
