Join Probus Bedfordview’s next meeting on October 1

Gordon will talk about walking the Camino de Santiago as a pilgrim, with his wife Lynn of 49 years, in 2018, 2019 as well as 2023.

Probus Bedfordview’s next open meeting will take place on October 1 starting from 10:00 – 10:30.

As per norm the meeting will take place at the lounge of St George’s Village.

The guest speaker is Gordon Forbes.

According to the club’ secretary, Tony Annis, Gordon grew up in Malvern and matriculated from Jeppe High School.

He was educated at Wits University and UCT and has a BSc building degree and numerous post graduate diplomas from both universities.

He is a 73-year-old, retired construction project manager.

Gordon has competed in 11 Comrades Marathons, 10 Two Oceans, 79 marathons and half-marathons, three Duzis, three Iron Man triathlons and three Midmar Mile swims.

He has slowed down and taken up hiking and he has walked/hiked all over Southern Africa and the world.

The Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St James, is a Catholic pilgrimage to the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela, where St James the Great’s remains are thought to be located.

“The hike isn’t only for the pious, however. While there are many religiously significant stops along the way, a wide array of international trekkers enjoy the pilgrimage route every year.

“The Camino is actually a network of trails in Spain, France and Portugal, and it’s most popular route, the 730Km Camino Francés, spans from the city of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port at the base of the French Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain,” said Annis.
