How to report stolen or lost firearms – Bedfordview SAPS

Residents advised to report missing firearms to their nearest police station.

The Bedfordview SAPS has advised the public on reporting presumption cases such as firearms that are either reported as stolen or lost.

This also includes instances where firearms cannot be located.

“If a deceased had a firearm and the family cannot trace it the only way to account for such firearm is to be reported at the nearest police station and a case of stolen or lost be registered so that the firearm can be circulated.

“The same goes for a security company whereby the new responsible person is aware or made aware that the company had firearms.

“Such a responsible person must report such firearms to the police after he/she applied all efforts to establish the whereabouts of such firearm(s) and the search was abortive,” said the police’s communications officer, Sergeant Lillian Modiga.

She said a firearm is a dangerous weapon which needs to be circulated so that the person who will be found in possession of such firearm can be arrested.

Seven days are allowed to prove that firearms are missing.

No security guard may be issued with a permit exceeding 72 hours, which exposes the person who will be in possession of such firearm to have had the intention of stealing.
