Repairs on Selwyn Road water leak incomplete

CoE says they have completed repairs at Selwyn Road. However, resident says only 90% of the repairs were completed.

The prolonged case of the water leak and resulting sinkhole on Selwyn Road has seen some progress, though not without concerns from residents.

An 11m long, six-metre wide and about two-metre deep sinkhole left uncovered at Selwyn Road in Bedfordview was starting to pose safety concerns for residents.

Bedfordview Edenvale News previously reported that the hole was dug after concerned resident Patrick Moore reported a water leak outside his property.

The situation soon turned into a prolonged saga of municipal negligence.

Following the article, the City of Ekurhuleni’s spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said repairs were completed on August 17.

The uncovered site at Selywn Road before repairs were done by the metro.

However, Moore confirmed that only about 90% of the repairs were done.

He said contractors had left concrete ruins and rubbles on pavements.

“We will see what happens in the coming weeks,” said Moore.

At the time Moore explained that after weeks of reporting only towards the end of April, the leak received some attention.

However, because it continued to leak even after numerous attempts to fix it, contractors had to use an excavator to investigate the underlying problem.

After the digging and the replacement of pipes, there had been no follow-up.

Dlamini said that the department will address the matter of safety around repair sites with their internal staff and a team from the service providers.

“The department had to devise a plan to deal with intersecting services as the water pipe was crossing a sewer manhole.

“It must also be made clear that we do not know the extent of the damage until we identify the problem,” said Dlamini.
