SANBS urges local women to take part in blood donation

Celebrate Women's Month and give the gift of life.

Are you planning a coffee date with the girls?

Come and enjoy your first cuppa at South African National Blood Services (SANBS) donor centre, settle into the comfy recliners and donate a pint while spending time with friends.

This Women’s Month, ladies are urged to become regular donors thus contributing to saving the lives of others.

“As female donors it is important to ensure that you keep your iron levels at optimal levels,” said Angelina Leeto, clinic supervisor.

“Menstrual cycles could lead to these levels to drop but consumption of iron rich foods will quickly assist in those levels normalising.”

It is recommended that donors consume a heathy variety of:
• Meat products

• Dark leafy greens

• Seeds, nuts, legumes and beans

• Tomato, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and green pepper

• Strawberries, oranges, grapefruit, sweet melon and watermelon.

Leeto cautioned against consuming caffeinated beverages, such as tea, coffee and energy drinks with meals, as this prevents iron absorption.

“Rather opt for a glass of fresh fruit juice or water,” she said.

“Women who are undergoing fertility treatment, pregnant or breastfeeding are not eligible to donate but are encouraged to bring their friends.”

Northmead SANBS Donor Centre staff have set out the cups and are ready to collect blood from donors weighing over 50kg, between the aged from 16 to 75 and leading a healthy lifestyle.

The centre is open from 10:00 to 18:00.
