The club strives to make a positive impact in the communities they serve through charity work, fundraising and youth development.

They work closely with schools and Uitkoms Home for Girls among others.

Lloyd Derengi is the new Rotary Johannesburg East president.

“I joined the club driven by my commitment to serve the community and contribute at an individual level.

“I took the initiative to look for a club, which is close to my home for convenience and to be more effective,” he shared.

Their latest projects include renovations at Cansa and cleaning up the Jukskei River.

He said limited resources make it difficult to cover all their area of work.

They host fundraising projects to be able to fund their national initiatives.

“I am humbled to be nominated by my club to lead them. I believe it is time to show my talents and my leadership skills.”

His goals are to ensure that they maintain the current projects and to build a strong relationship with local businesses.

He said the club also wants to venture into areas they have not been paying attention to increase their niche.

“We want to work with the youth that are facing the challenges of substance abuse. There are lots of young people that are into drugs, so we haven’t been in that space.

“I think as a club we want to increase diversity and inclusivity to be able to reach even those who are living with disabilities,” stated Derengi.

He extended an invitation to young people too to join them.

“Some of the work we do involves young people. Therefore, we need young people who understand the language of young people to be part of the club.”

Van Schalkwyk wished him all the best and said she felt blessed to have Derengi step up for the position.

She explained that he had undergone the necessary training making him equipped to lead.

“I am privileged and honoured to hand over the baton to him. I am confident that he will take the journey and spirit of Rotary into communities in a good way,” said Van Schalkwyk.

They meet on the first and third Mondays at 18:30 at Cardoso in Bedfordview.
