Finance MMC improves finances of the city

Residents need to pay for the service they enjoy and understand to sustain them payment is needed,

The Ekurhuleni council reconvened last Thursday after a brief recess, originally scheduled to elect a new whip following Jongizizwe Dlabathi’s appointment as MMC of Finance.

However, the election was postponed to the next meeting, with Clr Pelisa Nkunjana serving as the acting whip for the day.

The session focused on Dlabathi, as concerns about the city’s finances were raised.

Dlabathi’s fourth-quarter report did not impress the council.

Lesiba Mojapelo, head of the Super Seven, highlighted persistent issues such as cash in hand, revenue collection, and service delivery.

Dlabathi outlined a recovery plan emphasising financial stability, supply chain management, expenditure and budget management, financial discipline, and audit performance improvement.

He stressed the need for residents to pay for services to sustain them.

To support this, the MMC will launch the Siyakhokha Siyathuthuka campaign, aimed at reinstalling a culture of payment among residents and businesses and strengthening the city’s financial position.

“This administration is committed to maintaining financial stability while addressing the needs of our residents and driving sustainable urban development,” stated Dlabathi.
