Man caught with unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Elandsfontein

Members of the Bedfordview Crime Prevention Unit apprehended the suspect during patrols in Elandsfontein on June 21 around 18:40.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Members of the Bedfordview Crime Prevention Unit apprehended the suspect during patrols in Elandsfontein on June 21 around 18:40.

Bedfordview SAPS’s communication liaison officer, Lillian Modiga, said the suspect was with his other friends when they were approached by officers.

Upon noticing the police they ran away but the officers were able to apprehend the one suspect.

“When searched he was found with a firearm hidden behind his back in his trousers. Officers asked him to produce his firearm licence and he failed.

“He was arrested for possession of illegal firearm and ammunition and was taken to the nearest police station for detention,” explained Modiga.

She added that the police are still looking for the other suspects.

“A backup was requested to search for the other suspects at Mabondeni informal settlement. They couldn’t be traced.”

Anyone with information linked to this case is urged to come forward.
