Join Little Eden on July 18 for Mandela Day celebrations

"We'd love as many people as possible to join us on the day,”

Little Eden Society invites community members and corporate organisations to celebrate Mandela Day with the NPO and its residents.

Set to be held on July 18 the event is set to be held at the Edenvale and Bapsfontein homes between 09:00 and 15:00.

In celebration of Nelson Mandela’s legacy, the society encouraged everyone to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to making a positive impact on the lives of their residents.

According to the public relations and communications co-ordinator of the society, Gaahele Mokgoro, this year’s theme, ‘Early Childhood Development, Food Security, and Just Cities,’ underscores the NPO’s commitment to nurturing growth, ensuring well-being and fostering community support.

Visitors are encouraged to donate disposable nappies, soft cereals for the residents, or second-hand items for the Little Eden’s charity shop.

On the day visitors will engage in various activities with the residents, including maintenance work, sorting donations in the charity shop depot and engaging in limited therapy activities with some of the residents.

At the Domitilla and Danny Hyams Home in Edenvale, stimulation corners will be available for the residents.

Each corner will have residents participating, with caregivers rotating them throughout the day to avoid overstimulation.

There will be:

• A knitting corner

• An arts and crafts corner

• A makeup corner

• A puzzle and games corner

• A reading corner

Items needed for stimulation corners are:

Nail polish, hand cream, nail files, lip gloss, wool, crochet hooks, coloured hair spray, knitting needles, aqueous cream and funky socks of all sizes.

“It’s an ideal opportunity to make a difference and help to celebrate one of South Africa’s most inspiring leaders and icons, Nelson Mandela,” said CEO of Little Eden Xelda Rohrbeck.

“We’d love as many people as possible to join us on the day,” said Rohrbeck.

“This will help us continue our work in providing care and support for the 300 children and adults living with profound intellectual disability being cared for at our homes.”
