Discussion on seabird survival held at Modderfontein Conservation Society

Jutten Island is one of four islands in the Saldanha Bay area, north of Cape Town, where the West Coast National Park has a Pelican Watch Programme in progress.

The Modderfontein Conservation Society will host honourary SA National Parks ranger Carmin Mohr this month.
Set for June 29, the topic of discussion will be Why pelicans are a threat to gannets and cormorants.

Her illustrated talk will be at the Education Centre in the Modderfontein Reserve at 14:00, and visitors are welcome.

Mohr and three colleagues spent a week watching pelicans on Jutten Island and will provide insight and answers to guests.

Jutten Island is one of four islands in the Saldanha Bay area, north of Cape Town, where the West Coast National Park has a Pelican Watch Programme in progress.

This programme began nine years ago because of the increased predation by Great white pelicans on Cape gannet and Cape cormorant chicks, resulting in a threat to the survival of these species in the region.

The programme entails West Coast National Park staff and volunteers taking turns on seven-day shifts during these vulnerable seabirds’ breeding season.

Growing up in Edenvale, Mohr became a teacher, teaching physical and natural sciences until she retired a few years ago.

She enjoys working with children and loves animals.

These two interests merged when she joined the SANParks Honorary Rangers, where she was appointed the National Project: Junior Honorary Rangers chairperson.
