Edenvale Police strengthen relations with entities to tackle social ills

Sergeant Malesela Bopape, the Social Crime Prevention co-ordinator and Warrant Officer Jacob Mashile, the Edenvale SAPS communication officer, led the meeting held on June 14.

The Edenvale SAPS met with the Department of Social Development (DSD) and the NGO You are Not Alone (Yana) to strengthen ties and improve relations.

Sergeant Malesela Bopape, the Social Crime Prevention co-ordinator, along with Warrant Officer Jacob Mashile, the Edenvale SAPS communication officer, led the meeting held on June 14.

Mashile said the purpose was to engage the community members.

He said this would happen through an active dialogue themed Quality of Learning and Teaching.

The SAPS hope to do this by bringing community members from distinguished cultural, religious and social backgrounds together to deliberate on topical issues about child protection and GBV.

The topics of discussion included:
• GBVF;

• Reporting abuse and GBVF cases;

• The importance for parents to attend meetings at their children’s schools;

• Statutory rape;

• Importance of education;

• Encouraging youth to participate in sports and recreational activities;

• Peer and group pressure;

• Teaching a boy child to respect and care for the female gender.

Edenvale SAPS station commander Colonel Ntombomzi Edith Basholo welcomed the initiative and encouraged Edenvale’s Visible Policing Unit and others to work with the stakeholders.
