Tzu Chi Foundation distributes winter relief packs to 2000 families

“We have given away shoes, shirts, rice imported from Taiwan, and other necessities.”

The Tzu Chi Foundation South Africa distributed winter relief supplies to 2 000 families living in the Marathon informal settlement on June 21.

In the cold morning, beneficiaries flocked in their numbers to queue for their packages.

Foundation members spoke to the crowd and taught the community the song We are one family after completing the setup.

The handover went smoothly with the help of the Primrose Youth Crime Prevention Desk, the EMPD, the Primrose SAPS, and the Tzu Chi Foundation South Africa volunteers (from Primrose informal settlements and Pretoria).

Volunteer Cammy Lam said that even a small act of kindness could have a big impact.

“We have given away shoes, shirts, rice imported from Taiwan, and other necessities. We are going to Delmore next, and in July, we are back in Primrose on two accounts – to donate to families from Delport and Makause infromal settlements and the Primrose area,” said Lam.

“This year, we teamed with SA Harvest. In previous years, we frequently did everything as an organisation. They were able to contribute by giving us some clothing. Most of its food banks were emptied to support flood victims in other provinces.

“We continue to provide regular emergency help and do home-based care visits. Additionally, we request that the recipients come out, assist and register to be volunteers. To register, speak to your local volunteer or visit our offices in Bedfordview,” said Lam.

Nqobile Mbonyani said the help comes at the right time when many of the beneficiaries are unemployed.
“This will help us cook for our families and feed our children. We always appreciate the foundation coming to help us.

“We have even learnt to cook the rice in various ways to best suit our tastes. We also learnt it is crucial to look after your neighbours and those around you,” said Mbonyani.
