Lack of service delivery leaves Eastleigh resident at her wits’ end

“We can’t continue to live like this.”

The condition of a portion of Danie Theron Street has left Eastleigh resident Kash Tewary at her wits’ end.

Her and her family’s frustration about the street’s surface has left them questioning service delivery in Ekurhuleni.

The section of road located at its most northern point has deteriorated to the point where walking on sections of it feels like walking on a spongy surface.

It is cracked and crumbling, has potholes forming and seems more like a piece of apocalyptic infrastructure than a portion of a residential road.

According to the Tewary, the most recent problems surrounding the road started in April.

She said water flowing onto and possibly even under it has caused it to deteriorate.

When Bedfordview and Edenvale News visited the location at the end of May, the condition of the road was observed as well as water consistently flowing out of several pipes and onto the road.

Tewary said on May 28 representatives from the roads and stormwater department visited the site to assess the situation.

Besides the visit by roads and stormwater official, Tewary said no other action was taken by the municipality to fix the road.

“As water is flowing out of a nearby property the municipality told me that this is a private matter. I’ve since asked for the municipality’s engineer report,” said Tewary.

Having moved to Edenvale from Johannesburg almost two years ago, Tewary said she is disappointed in the level of service delivery in the area.

One of the reasons she moved was to be closer to her family.

“We can’t even clean our car because every time we use our driveway it becomes covered in mud and dirty water,” said Tewary.

Although this problem reared its head in April, Tewary said that the road started deteriorating last year. The municipality came out and remediated the matter.

Tewary said that as a property owner, who tries to keep her property and pavement as well-maintained as possible, she feels extremely frustrated by the municipality’s lack of action.

Besides affecting her personal life, Tewary said the issue has started affecting her work life.

Tewary who works in the service industry said she has to take time off work to try and resolve the situation.
Something which she can’t afford to do anymore.
