Bedfordview Cards Club still going strong after four decades

Initially, the Bedfordview Cards Club started at the Bedfordview Country Club before moving to Jeppe Quondam, where they have been based for over 30 years.

Founded in 1985, the Bedfordview Cards Club has stood the test of time.

A group of individuals established this social club for friendship and networking purposes.

Currently chaired by Gordon Eddey, the club boasts a rich history and a roster of dedicated members, some of whom have been part of its fabric since it started.

Some founders who have been influential in shaping the club into what it is include John Warwick, whose late wife was the former mayor of Bedfordview and George Vorster, who created an orchid named in memory of a child who died of cancer.

The event organiser, Gordon Huddy, with Mike van der Riet, has been handling the club’s finances from inception.
Initially, the club started at the Bedfordview Country Club before moving to Jeppe Quondam, where they have been based over the years.

“When it was formed, a lot of us were members of Rotary at the time. When we left Rotary, we thought, what can we do for the men in Bedfordview?

“Also, we had a lot of people residing in Bedfordview but had businesses or worked out of the area. That was when we started to gather to enjoy each other’s company over a meal and engaging conversations.

“Eventually, it became a space for professional networking and business exchanges,” shared the members of the club.

Currently, they are meeting on the first Tuesday of the month and invite different speakers. They also host a ladies’ night once every four months.

Reminiscing about the good old days, the members shared how they had a waiting list of people wanting to join.

“It was a lot easier in those days to get a variety of speakers. We had the pleasure of hosting South African Cricketer Roy McLean as our first speaker.”

The memorable speakers included André Watson (former South African rugby union referee).

Through the years, the club has seen a decline in membership as members have relocated; others have died and the impact of Covid-19.

However, the club remains committed to fostering a community and a space of camaraderie.

“We haven’t managed to get enough young new members into the club and because everybody has retired now, there is not a lot of interaction on a business level. We always welcome new members to keep the club going, as it has been part of the community for so long.

“We welcome people from all walks of life and are not restricted to Bedfordview like previously,” they said.

Originally, members had to be Bedfordview residents or have a business in the area.

They have expressed an interest in having young people join them.

“People can join us for a fun evening over a meal and listen to interesting speakers. There is a minimum fee they will have to pay which contributes towards the meal and the maintenance of the club.

“It is great for people within the vicinity and a great way to interact and meet new people,” they shared.

The next ladies’ night will take place in June.
