New boarding facilities at Jeppe Girls opened

History was made when Jeppe High School for Girls celebrated the official opening of Somerset House.
The opening of the girl’s boarding house was held on March 10.

The event was described by the school as being a testament to perseverance and teamwork and a significant milestone for Jeppe Girls.

Former manager of the Ruth First Jeppe Memorial Trust, Kevin Tait, commemorated the opening of Somerset House. He highlighted the long-awaited fulfilment of a vision to provide hostel accommodation for Jeppe Girls with the full support of current headmistress, Sybil Bhagwan.

Tait traced the school’s journey from early plans for hostels to the trust’s pivotal role in realising this endeavour, expressing gratitude to all involved in making the vision a reality.

Robyn Hill, current manager of the Ruth First Jeppe Memorial Trust and Jeppe High School for Girls social worker, recognised the transformative impact of boarding facilities, particularly for students facing socioeconomic challenges.

The trust hopes that Somerset House is more than just a residence but a second home offering stability, support and empowerment.

Public relations officer and marketer for Jeppe High School for Girls Lesley-Ann Muller said current boarders shared some personal stories with the guests.

“Learners detailed their experiences, their excitement, pride and positivity based on how their day-to-day lives and academic achievements have improved as a result of living in Somerset House,” said Muller.

On March 10 history was made when Jeppe High School for Girls celebrated the official opening of Somerset House.

Bhagwan ended the celebration by extending heartfelt gratitude to all those who contributed to making this dream a reality.

This included the financial investment of the Ruth First Jeppe Memorial Trust, the unwavering commitment and hard work of the SGB, and school staff, as well as the ongoing support from the GDE and the entire Jeppe community who have created a home-away-from-home for the girls.

Bhagwan thanked the Make a Difference Leadership Foundation for their continued belief in Jeppe Girls and ongoing support.

Muller said MAD has funded six of the seven learners who currently board at Somerset House.

Through this initiative, Jeppe High School for Girls and the Ruth First Jeppe Memorial Trust aim to usher in a new era of opportunity and growth for its students.
