Local athlete dominates provincial championships

Rising star Tyran Brooks continued his dominance at the 2024 (U16/U18/U20/U23) Track and Field Provincial Championships at Germiston Stadium.

The championships, taking place between March 8 and 9, saw Brooks running an outstanding time of 08:56.71 in the 3000m event.

Throughout the season Brooks has dominated the same event.

Athletes gave it their all at the provincial championships between March 8 and 9.

Following a remarkable four leagues hosted by the province, athletes displayed good performances.

There was much excitement at the championships as athletes sought to qualify for the national championships which are scheduled to take place between March 21 and 23, in Pretoria.

“We hope to see Brooks on the national podium in CGA colours at the 2024 ASA U16, U18, U20 championships,” said CGA PR and communications intern Nongcebo Siziba.

In second position was Noah Junior of WWAC in the time of 09:26.62. Settling for a bronze position was Siyanda Malone of Thembisa with a time of 09:30.20.

“The highlight of the day was the battle between sprinters Mukona Mnavhela of Germiston Callies, Andreas Chizinga of De Anker and Mandla Mavungu of Brakpan, in the exciting men U18 200m,” said Siziba.

“We witnessed the athletes give the final 200m race their best performances to all clock ASA qualifying times.

“In the field event, we saw Oluchi Ndubueze of IHT dominate the event with a jump of 5.63 to appear on the podium with a gold medal with an ASA qualifier distance.

CGA athletes compete at the CGA Provincial Championships to qualify for the nationals.

The provincial senior championships took place on March 16 at UJ’s Auckland Park Athletics Stadium.

The CGA Track and Field chairperson, Maggie Dicks, indicated that the province must ensure that athletes are well prepared for national championships and other major international championships such as the Olympic Games later this year.
