Local club adds half-marathon to mark Human Rights Day

"We are responding to the running community’s demand for a longer distance by introducing a 21.1km double lap event.”

After the success of their inaugural Human Rights Day Race last year, Sunward Park-based Qhubeka Athletic Club has added a new 21.1km double lapper for this year’s event on March 21 at the School of Achievement in Germiston.

The inaugural event attracted a field of around 600 runners and included a 10km race, won by Benoni Northerns Athletic Club’s Bright Mikolongwe and Ziningi Ndlovu of Xcel AC, and a 5km fun run.

The club said its decision to add a new event followed a demand for a longer distance from the “running community after the resounding success” of its maiden race.

“We are known for our commitment to excellence in organising running events. We are thrilled to unveil enhancements for our upcoming event in March.

“We are responding to the running community’s demand for a longer distance by introducing a 21.1km double lap event,” said chairperson Benzi Tenza.

Tenza explained participants can expect the same organisational excellence, hospitality and quality.

“With a focus on meeting the highest road running standards, we aim to provide a fantastic family day out. The event will feature family-friendly entertainment, ensuring inclusivity for all ages and fitness levels.”

Pre-entries are open and will close on February 29. Free t-shirts will be offered to the first 300 entrants.

The entry fee for the half-marathon is R240, R190 for the 10km race and R100 for the 5km event. Those with temporary licenses will pay R70 for the 21.1km race and R60 for the 10KM.

“We look forward to welcoming participants for a memorable Human Rights Day Race. We are dedicated to promoting excellence in road running events and fostering a community-driven ethos in every race.
